It is fitting that this member spotlight is being posted today, because yesterday was Brenelly’s fifth year anniversary at CrossFit Raw Appeal. We didn’t time this on purpose, but we felt it was overdue to shine the light on her, as she provides a light for everyone around her.
We officially opened the doors at CrossFit RA the first of September in 2014. In the early days, it wasn’t uncommon that there would be one person in class. The day Brenelly came to check out CFRA, she happened to be the only person in class. The workout was 30 seconds of rowing, 30 seconds of rest for 30 Rounds. Brenelly didn’t walk out because she was the only person in class and she didn’t walk out because the workout looked too tough. She stayed and did the d&*m thing! Since then, we’ve seen Brenelly 5-6 days a week and know she must be out of town if she isn’t at the gym everyday but Sunday. And for that, we are grateful.
Brenelly is married to Victor. Together they have two children, Victor & Gisel.
Brenelly is fierce. She is strong. She is driven. She is amazing at her crafts (check out her cakes on instagram @sabrinassweets13). And though it is really difficult to keep up with her during a workout, it is easy being around her.
Above all else, Brenelly is unceasingly giving. Brenelly never hesitates to bake (delicious) goods for any and all types of fundraisers we host at the gym. She has made many cakes for member’s baby showers, weddings, birthdays etc. During the month of October we raise funds for Barbells for Boobs. We hosted our annual kid’s Halloween party last weekend and Brenelly graciously donated her time and talents to paint the kid’s faces. She donated all of the monetary contributions for the face painting to Barbells for Boobs. She truly has a heart of gold. For this spotlight, we had the opportunity to ask her a few questions. Here’s a little more about her, from her.
Why do you CrossFit at RA?
B: I love the amazing community we have at CFRA. These peeps are a second family to me. Some days I am so tired, without sleep, stressed, anxious, or sad. I know my daily WOD (workout of the day) will take my mind off it, or my friends at the gym will. It is great to have a place where we can all go to get away from the craziness of our everyday life. Plus, I love me a good workout!!
What words do you live by?
B: The fountain of eternal youth and happiness is being constantly engaged in a good cause. When I am busy doing something good, there’s no room for me to be sad, mad or have any sort of negative feelings or thoughts. That good cause can be to help others or help myself. I love learning, and I believe that progress is eternal. If there is something after this life… I believe, what you will take with you will be your own personal progress, what you learned and the wisdom you obtained.
Who has been the most influential person in your life?
As a Christian, the most influential person in my life is Jesus Christ. His teachings and love have helped me decide who I want to be. His example has guided my life. The decisions I make, based on his teachings, determine who I am.
Besides Him, my husband is the one person who has influenced my life more than anyone else. Victor brings out the best in me. He teaches me with love and patience, he gives me a firm foundation, peace, and hope. He supports all my crazy ideas and helps me refine all the bad ones.
What has led you to be so giving?
Having been born and raised in Guatemala, I have seen firsthand the extreme poverty in which many live. I am constantly in awe at the joy of those who don’t have material possessions or resources, and at the grievances of those who have so much. I’ve learned to suffer with those who suffer, at least in some degree. It has led me to feel a need to help others bear their burdens. In many cases I haven’t had the resources to do so, but I’ve come to understand that I can be a facilitator. If we all were to do or give… even in a very small way, our communities would be so much better. We are normally not required to give it all, but we all have something to give. We have all been blessed with talents, things, and other resources. Giving does so much in our own hearts and lives. We are truly changed through giving.
Thank you, Brenelly, for all that you do for this community and those around you! We love having you as a part of the RA family.
